frugal*healthy*yummy recipe #1

~ spiced apple porridge ~

ingredients:
dry oats
generic is cheaper and usually has less sodium
small apple
don't waste your money on big ones for this recipe
sweetener
Going for low-cal? Splurge for Splenda. More concerned with frugal? Use generic sugar.
autumn spices (cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves)
sometimes you can find these at the dollar store; mix together in an airtight container and scoop as needed into recipes, coffee, etc.…
skim milk
it's not really porridge without the milk/cream...

directions:
Peel and chop your apple.
Cook your desired amount of oats on the stovetop.
While the oats are still hot, stir in the chopped apple, sweetener, and spices to taste.
Pour mixture into breakfast bowl and add desired amount of milk.
Enjoy!

Notice that there is no butter necessary! And, you consume three of the major food groups in one sitting. If you don’t like artificial sweeteners but still don’t want the calories from sugar, try it without and see if the apples add enough natural sweetness for your taste.
