'tis the season...

The following is by no means a new or original thought, but for the first year ever, it has completely hit me how screwed up Christmas has become. I’m sitting at work, looking into our reception area at a Christmas card with Santa Claus standing on top of the earth, releasing peace doves into the night sky. Yes, people, Santa and Christmas bring peace and harmony to our world, if only for a brief season. What utter disgusting psycho-babble BS. Let’s all spend a month running over each other for parking spaces, racking up insurmountable charges on our credit cards, and being nice to Aunt Edna for an evening or two. Joy to the world. Then next month we can go back to running over each other for parking spaces, wallowing in debt, and forgetting that Aunt Edna even exists.

I am definitely feeling more like this:
Stop bringing me meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New moons, Sabbaths and convocations – I cannot bear your evil assemblies. Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. ~ Isaiah 1:13-14

Than this:
After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him.” …When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. ~ Matthew 2:1-2 & 10-11

Which means I need to follow this:
Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. ~ Isaiah 1:16-17

And this:
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself .’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments. ~ Matthew 22:37-40

… throughout the year.
